The Toronto Blue Jays have surprised a lot of people and placed themselves at the top of the loaded American League East. But if the Blue Jays want to hold this spot ahead of the New York Yankees, they’re going to need to be aggressive at the trade deadline.
The top position the Blue Jays need to upgrade is their starting rotation. Toronto’s rotation lacks top-end talent and depth. Adding a talented arm could turn the Blue Jays into a powerhouse.
Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report recently suggested the Blue Jays could land a trade for “disgruntled” Athletics starting pitcher Luis Severino ahead of the trade deadline.
“Severino has proved he can stay healthy again after struggling to do so from 2019-2023,” Kelly wrote. “He’s also someone who has experience pitching in the biggest market for both New York teams. If this is as simple as getting him to pitch his home games at any other stadium, it shouldn’t be hard to find a taker, especially if the A’s are willing to either take back a bad contract in return or pay down some of his remaining money.”
“The Blue Jays make sense as a landing spot because they are currently in first place in the AL East, and they could use another pitcher capable of starting a postseason game. Additionally, Severino would give Toronto an insurance policy if Chris Bassitt leaves in free agency after this season.”
If the Athletics are willing to cut ties with Severino for a minimal return to get off his contract, this idea makes plenty of sense for the Blue Jays.
Severino has been much better on the road than he has been at home this season, and he hasn’t shied away from sharing his feelings on the Athletics’ temporary home field.
With his production being so impressive on the road, the Blue Jays could confidently place him as their No. 3 starter for the next few years.
