Woman Checks Cam After Leaving Cat With Flatmate—Stunned by What She Sees

A viral video has left internet viewers in stitches after capturing a woman’s flatmate in the middle of an unexpected moment with her beloved orange cat.

Wanting to make sure everything was fine while she was out, Maria Laura Amador (@marialauraamadorm) decided to review her home security footage—only to witness a scene she hadn’t imagined.

Racking up over 633,000 views, the July 10 clip shows her flatmate standing in the hallway as the curious feline approaches. But instead of a casual greeting, he surprises viewers by gently picking up the cat’s front paws and bouncing in a circle with it—making it look as if they are dancing together.

The moment doesn’t end there: after the improvised waltz, he scoops the cat up for a heartfelt cuddle, solidifying his status as an unusually devoted pet-sitter.

The video’s text overlay, translated from the Spanish, reads: “when you leave your cat with your flatmate and check the security cam.”

The clip’s popularity highlights why so many pet owners take their choice of sitter seriously.

Recent Talker Research conducted for Newsweek found that around 66 percent of Americans strongly agree that they consider their pets a part of the family.

The same survey revealed that neighbors are the least-trusted option for pet-sitting, with only 5 percent willing to leave their animals with them.

This viral moment suggests that, for many, the right flatmate might just be the perfect stand-in family member.

At the time of writing, the video has over 79,000 likes and more than 560 comments.

Translated from Spanish to English, one user said: “My daughter jumps like this with the cat on her bed and he loves it so much.”

“Green Flag: love the cat,” posted another.

“They’re doing a ritual dance to stay together and for you to leave,” wrote a third.

Indeed, there is a chance the feline has a soft spot for the woman’s roomie. Newsweek previously spoke to a cat behavior expert to uncover the key signs that reveal whether your feline prefers you over other people.

Joey Lusvardi, a cat behavior consultant certified by the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants and runs a Minneapolis business called Class Act Cats, shared the following signs:

  • Affiliative behaviors: Cats show affection by slow blinking and bunting (rubbing their head or face on you to mark with pheromones).
  • Preferring your company: They choose to spend most of their time near you, even when there is no reward like food or treats.
  • Trusting you: Cats allow you to handle things they usually dislike, such as nail trimming, showing they feel safe with you.
  • Missing you: Felines act especially excited to see you after time apart, more so than with other people.

Newsweek reached out to @marialauraamadorm for comment via TikTok. We could not verify the details of the case.
