Vice President JD Vance is expected to visit Orange County this weekend, according to multiple local officials.
While the White House has not officially confirmed the visit, Orange County Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento, a Democrat, told KTLA’s Chip Yost Friday that Vance’s advance team was in the area on Thursday.
Sarmiento, who was attending a food drive at a local high school in Garden Grove, expressed frustration over the visit.
“To the extent that I’m offended by the visit, because so many families are being terrorized by the policies from the federal government,” Sarmiento said. He expressed that the policies have led to people skipping medical visits, refraining from participating in commerce and keeping children indoors.
On his personal social media, Sarmiento shared a post stating that Vance was “not welcome.”
“If he had a change of heart, we’d embrace him,” he said.
Orange County Supervisor Don Wagner, a Republican, offered a more tempered response, acknowledging Sarmiento’s concerns but encouraging dialogue rather than division.
“I do think it’s an opportunity for us, instead of casting stones, to cast a wider net,” Wagner said. “We’ve had questions about ICE operations in Santa Ana. This could be a chance to engage rather than stay away.”
Vance is expected to arrive at John Wayne Airport, although no public schedule has been released. According to Sarmiento, Vance may be visiting the county on a leisure trip.
