The MLB trade deadline often brings quite a bit of excitement to the baseball world.
This season, the Seattle Mariners seem destined to be one of the more active teams in the league. Seattle has a loaded farm system to trade from and some holes on the roster to upgrade.
On offense, the Mariners need to add some pop to take advantage of Cal Raleigh’s incredible season. Adding another slugger alongside Raleigh would be a massive step in the right direction.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan recently listed Arizona Diamondbacks slugger Josh Naylor as the “best match” in a trade for the Mariners this year. Naylor is signed to a one-year deal in Arizona.
“Though the Mariners are managing with Donovan Solano and Luke Raley at first base, upgrading to Naylor would transform Seattle’s lineup for the better,” Passan wrote. “Whether it’s slotting him behind J.P. Crawford to ensure Cal Raleigh comes to the plate with more baserunners, or sticking him in between Raleigh and Randy Arozarena to do the cleaning up himself, Naylor is a high-average, low-strikeout slugger whose quality at-bats would help transform a solid Seattle lineup into something more.”
Naylor would seemingly be the perfect upgrade for the Mariners.
He would fill in at a position of need while complementing Ralaigh, Julio Rodriguez, and J.P. Crawford in the lineup very well.
On the season, Naylor is slashing .296/.357/.465 with 11 home runs and 18 doubles. He’s in the middle of a career season at the plate while playing solid defense at first base.
Adding him to Seattle would give the Mariners an everyday first baseman with star potential.
