Unless you follow David Corenswet on Instagram—and to be fair, nearly 900,000 people do—you may not be familiar with his name. As of this weekend, though, everyone will know who he is. Corenswet is about to take up the mantle of the world’s most iconic hero: Superman, in the eponymous new film from James Gunn.
The 32-year-old American is far from a newcomer to the screen. He’s appeared in all sorts of projects, from film—including Pearl and Twisters—to TV, where he has appeared on House of Cards and Elementary. He had more prominent roles in two Ryan Murphy series for Netflix, The Politician and Hollywood. The new Man of Steel has two other projects in the works as well: the series The Answers, with Pretty Little Liars alum Lucy Hale, and the film Mr. Irrelevant with Michael Shannon. But they certainly won’t be the last because he has now conquered Hollywood. He also directed an independent pilot about an Onlyfans camgirl called Real Live Girl and produced a short called Woman in the Sky.
Since March 2023, Corenswet has been married to actress Julia Best Warner, whom he met at an acting summer camp when he was still a young boy. Though their wedding was years ago, the pair only made their red carpet debut this week, at the Los Angeles premiere of Superman. Warner and Corenswet also have a one-year-old son.
Today, the Superman performer delivers messages of kindness and vulnerability—much like his on-screen alter ego. “I feel like I’ve been a dad for a long time, and just waiting for a kid to prove it,” he told People in June. “My dad was an enthusiastic father and stayed home with my sister for a period when she was very little, and was very good with kids. And so I think I just inherited that. I liked being a camp counselor, and I have terrible jokes that nobody laughs at.”
Corenswet’s parents were both lawyers, who raised him and his older sister, Amy, in New Orleans. He trained at Juilliard—just like the original Superman, Christopher Reeve—but hasn’t had a breakout role on this scale until now. “One of the things that interested me most about the film was to show that, beyond knowing how to fly and shoot lasers from his eyes, Superman doesn’t want anything more than to be human,” Gunn told VF Italy this month. “That’s what makes him special: he feels like he wants to create a connection with other people so he doesn’t feel alone.” If anyone can bring that vulnerability to life, it’s Corenswet.
