HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The Huntsville City Council voted to annex 1,000 acres of land, pushing the city into its fourth county.

Specifically, the council voted to annex 1,013.96 acres of land lying south of River Loop Road, and east and west of Vaughn Road. This ordinance was introduced on June 26.

Approval means Huntsville’s city limits will be in four counties across North Alabama. Those counties are Madison, Limestone, Morgan and now Marshall.

The City said this land would be used for an industrial plant and a quarry, and that the city has no intentions of developing this land further.

Having the quarry would give the City use of materials from it. The quarry uses city roads to transport materials, which can cause significant wear and tear. Annexing the quarry’s land would allow the City to fix the damaged roads.

The annexation would allow Huntsville to extend its ordinances to the quarry, protecting the city’s air quality and noise control.

The City added that the population will not grow, and it will have relatively no effect on city operations.

Although Michelle Watkins was not in attendance at the meeting, the remaining council members voted to approve the annexation.

In January, the council voted to add nearly 400 acres of land South of Highway 20 and East of I-65, off of Arrowhead Landing Road. This made Huntsville the 27th largest city in the U.S., bigger than Chicago.
