HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — It’s that time of the year again for the Great Diaper Drive, and a huge donation from Food City and Kimberly-Clark is kicking off the month of helping families across North Alabama.
The two companies donated over $73,000 worth of diapers, making a grand total of 4,047 diaper packs that filled an entire truck.
Food City President and CEO Steve Smith said it is part of the grocery retailer’s mission to give back to the communities in which it has a presence.
“I think we all know, if we bought diapers lately, they’re not cheap to buy,” Smith said. “And there’s a lot of folks out there that have the need. And we’ve partnered with our great business partners with Huggies and Kimberly-Clark, and we were able to come up with over $73,000 worth of diapers.”
The Great Diaper Drive benefits the Food Bank of North Alabama, who say they see a high demand for the item from the families it serves.
“Diapers are the most requested non-food item,” Food Bank of North Alabama Development Director Bobby Bozeman said. “1 in 5 kids in North Alabama are food insecure, so diaper insecurity goes along with that. And, a lot of times, parents are in a position where they’re having to choose between buying diapers and buying food for themselves.”
Bozeman said it is the Food Bank’s goal to help families receive the resources they need, and that aligns with the core values of Food City and Kimberly-Clark.
Bozeman continued that the significant donation by the two organizations today will make a strong impact on families in the Tennessee Valley.
“When people do get that assistance, it’s just the relief they feel is so, you know, it’s so incredible for us to see and so impactful on their lives,” Bozeman said.
The Great Diaper Drive begins July 14. People can donate at any of the six Food City locations in North Alabama: four in Huntsville, one in Albertville, and one in Fort Payne. The Food Bank of North Alabama is also accepting monetary donations directly.
