Kingston, N.Y. | $895,000

An Italianate house built in 1845, on 1 acre

This four-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom house, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is half a mile from the Senate House State Historic Site, where New York’s first state constitution was adopted in 1777. A French restaurant is within walking distance, as are a combined bar and bookstore, several coffee shops and a public library. Kingston Point Beach, on the Hudson, is a 15-minute drive.

Storm King Art Center is a 45-minute drive, Albany takes 50 minutes and New York City is two hours away.

Size: 3,791 square feet

Price per square foot: $236

Indoors: The house is set back from the street, with a paved walkway running through the center of the front lawn.

A raised porch opens to a foyer with hardwood floors and a staircase to the second level. There are two formal parlors off the foyer. One, with a fireplace, is set up as a library. The other has wallpaper with an ocean motif and is used as a sitting room. Both have original wood paneling.

A formal dining room behind the library has a crystal chandelier and six-over-six windows. A corridor with black and white tile floors connects the dining room to a kitchen with custom cabinets and a center island that has a wood countertop. The appliances, including a gas range, are stainless steel. A sunroom that faces the backyard is set up as a home gym, and there’s a powder room off the foyer.

All four bedrooms are on the second floor. The primary suite fits a king-size bed and has dark gray walls and white trim. The attached bathroom has a glass-walled shower and a deep soaking tub.

Next door is a bedroom used as a sitting room, with vibrant green walls and two large windows. Across the hall are two guest bedrooms connected by a full bathroom. Each fits a queen-size bed.

Outdoor space: The house is on an acre of land and the backyard is landscaped with grass and mature trees. A stone patio is tucked into a corner and a detached garage holds two cars.

Taxes: $19,610 (estimated)

Chicago | $899,000

A condominium in a 1908 building converted into residential units in the mid-1980s

This four-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bathroom unit is in a former industrial building in the West Loop. Greek, Italian and Mexican restaurants are all within walking distance, as is Au Cheval, an upscale diner-style restaurant known for its burgers. A small park with a playground is a few blocks away, and Union Station, an Amtrak hub, is a half-mile away.

The UIC-Halsted stop on the Chicago Transit Authority’s Blue Line is a five-minute walk, and the Art Institute of Chicago is 20 minutes away via rail. Ohio Street Beach, on Lake Michigan, is a 15-minute drive, and Wrigley Field takes half an hour.

Size: 2,781 square feet

Price per square foot: $323

Indoors: This unit’s front door opens to a foyer from which hallways extend to the bedrooms, and the open kitchen, living and dining rooms. The living room has exposed wood beams, ductwork and brick. There are bamboo floors, a fireplace and windows with city views. A powder room and a closet are both off the foyer.

The kitchen has a Thermador gas cooktop, a Sub-Zero refrigerator, a wine refrigerator and a breakfast bar with space for two.

The primary suite is directly off the foyer. Doors slide open to the bedroom, which has exposed wood overhead, a walk-in closet and a bathroom with a glass shower stall. There’s also an attached laundry room.

A second en suite and the remaining two bedrooms are down the hall, as is a bathroom with a separate tub and shower, and green tile walls. A smaller room, also on this side of the unit, is used as a home office.

Outdoor space: The building has a convenience store on the ground floor, and a deeded parking space is also available for purchase.

Taxes: $19,808 (estimated), plus a $947 monthly homeowner association fee

Salem, Ore. | $895,000

A 1925 house with a 1950s addition, on 0.2 acres

This six-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bathroom house is half a block from Bush’s Pasture Park, a 90-acre green space with a rose garden, tennis courts and walking trails. The house was once part of a property that included a filbert orchard, and a recent restoration added new HVAC and electrical systems and fresh insulation.

Downtown Salem, home to the Oregon State Capitol, is five minutes away by car. The Willamette University campus is less than a mile away, and driving to Portland takes around an hour.

Size: 4,034 square feet

Price per square foot: $222

Indoors: Paved steps lead from the street to the front door, which has a lion-head door knocker.

Hardwood floors continue from the foyer to a living room with a wall of windows facing the front yard and a fireplace with a tile surround. An arched doorway separates the living room from the dining room, where a picture offers views of the backyard. A spherical pendant light hangs from an ornate ceiling medallion and white-painted wood paneling lines the walls.

At the back of this level is the kitchen, which has glossy jade-green tiled walls. The floors are oak and the appliances include a gas range and a refrigerator with cabinet-style doors. A sunny sitting area and a breakfast nook with a gas fireplace are next to the kitchen. A half bathroom is also off this part of the house.

The primary suite is on the first floor, beyond the dining room. The bedroom fits a king-size bed, and the walk-in shower in the bathroom is finished with white subway tile. Also off the foyer is a bedroom set up as a home office, with blue and white wallpaper and windows covered with white shutters.

The other four bedrooms are on the second floor. The largest one is painted blue and has an alcove that could hold a desk. Next door is a bathroom with penny-tile floors and a walk-in shower. Three bedrooms are across the hall, all with hardwood floors and closets. Another full bathroom is on this level, and a laundry room is at the far end of the hall.

The basement is finished, with one area used as a media room and another used for storage. The basement also has a full bathroom.

Outdoor space: A paved patio is directly behind the house, and beyond it is a neat row of hedges. A detached garage has one parking spot, and the driveway has room for another two cars.

Taxes: $4,946 (estimated)
