A man suspected of driving while intoxicated was arrested after leading police in a pursuit that ended in violent crash over the weekend in San Bernardino County.
The July 5 incident began at around 10 p.m. when an officer with the Upland Police Department reportedly saw the suspect, behind the wheel of a white Audi, run a stop sign at 7th Street and San Antonio Avenue, the police department said in a post to social media.
“The driver, who was heavily intoxicated, pulled into a random person’s driveway and momentarily stopped,” police added.
In the officer’s body-worn camera footage, the man and a female passenger can be seen in the vehicle as the officer instructs the driver to turn the vehicle off.
Moments later, however, the man backs out of the driveway and leads the officer on a pursuit, which comes to a brief stop in what appears to be large parking lot. The female exits the vehicle momentarily, video shows, sees the police cruiser a short distance away and then gets back in the car as the driver takes off again.
Aerial footage of the incident captured by the Ontario Police Department’s helicopter shows the suspect speeding eastbound on Foothill Boulevard when he runs a red light at Campus Avenue and is T-boned by a motorist traveling southbound.
The night vision camera on the helicopter captures the exact moment of impact, which sent the Audio skidding off the road and onto the sidewalk.
Both vehicles sustained heavy damage, and police are seen cutting away the airbag to get the female passenger out of the Audi.
The exact conditions of the innocent motorist and the female passenger in the suspect’s vehicle were not provided. Police only said that both were complaining of pain.
Officers posted footage of the suspect in a hospital examining room, where he was presumably being evaluated for injuries before being taken into custody.
Authorities said he was later booked for felony evading and felony DUI.
