EXCLUSIVE: Michael B. Jordan’s reimagining of The Thomas Crown Affair for Amazon MGM Studios has added a pair of Oscar winners to its team: Kenneth Branagh (Belfast), who joins in an undisclosed (we’re told villainous) role, and producer Charles Roven (Oppenheimer), who will produce the film via his Atlas Entertainment banner, alongside Jordan and Elizabeth Raposo via Outlier Society, and others.
As previously announced, Jordan and Taylor Russell lead the cast of the film, which shoots this summer and is slated for an exclusive theatrical release on March 5, 2027.
While plot details are being kept under wraps, both the original 1968 film from United Artists and the 1999 remake from MGM were heist stories revolving around a wealthy, thrill-seeking man who orchestrates a high-stakes robbery simply for the challenge, only to find himself entangled in a complex cat-and-mouse game with a brilliant investigator.
As previously reported, Drew Pearce wrote the script for The Thomas Crown Affair, with Wes Tooke and Justin Britt-Gibson penning an earlier draft, based on the original film. Patrick McCormick and Toberoff Productions’ Marc Toberoff will also serve as producers, with Alan Trustman — who penned the 1968 original — serving as executive producer.
As you’ll recall, Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway starred in the first Thomas Crown Affair, directed by Norman Jewison, while Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo toplined the ’90s remake, helmed by Die Hard‘s John McTiernan.
Winning his first Oscar in 2022 for his screenplay for directorial effort Belfast, Branagh’s recent credits in front of the camera include Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, Tenet, and Oppenheimer. Most recently wrapping production opposite Boyd Holbrook and Hiam Abbass on Reed van Dyk’s debut feature Atonement, he’ll next be seen starring opposite Ryan Reynolds in Apple’s action comedy Mayday. He is represented by WME, Berwick & Kovacik, and Gochman Law Group.
Alongside partner Alex Gartner, Roven leads Atlas Entertainment, the production company behind Christopher Nolan’s Best Picture Oscar winner Oppenheimer. Currently, the company is in post on Mercy, a sci-fi thriller for Amazon MGM starring Chris Pratt, Rebecca Ferguson, Kali Reis and Annabelle Wallis, which is slated for release in theaters on January 23, 2026. Upcoming for Amazon MGM Studios, Atlas also has Road House 2, the sequel to the studio’s record-breaking 2024 reboot, which Guy Ritchie will direct, with Jake Gyllenhaal reprising his role as Dalton. Production begins this fall. In addition, Atlas’ independent division is in post on Vicious, a horror film for Paramount Pictures, starring Dakota Fanning.
