First responders working in the aftermath of catastrophic flooding in Kerr County, Texas, were being evacuated Sunday, amid renewed flash flood warnings in the Camp Mystic area, local meteorologist Dylan Federico wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

“FLASH FLOOD WARNING in effect for the Kerr County Camp Mystic Area,” Federico posted on X on Sunday evening. “First responders are being evacuated.”

At least 80 people have been confirmed dead after torrential rains caused widespread devastation across central Texas, CNN reported.

Officials continued search operations for missing victims, including campers and staff, as weather conditions forced changes to the ongoing rescue strategy.

Why It Matters

The evacuation of rescue teams marks a serious escalation in a disaster already labeled “catastrophic” by Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha.

With vulnerable populations, including campers and children, still unaccounted for, the withdrawal of first responders directly impacts ongoing recovery-and-rescue operations.

What To Know

The evacuation warning came as the National Weather Service (NWS) released updated advisories including a flood watch, two flash flood warnings, and an additional flood warning.

“Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Up to 1 inch of rain has fallen. Additional rainfall amounts up to 2 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly,” one alert from NWS said.

It warned of “life threatening flash flooding of creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses,” across multiple previously flooded areas including Ingram, Hunt, Waltonia and Mountain Home.

“North fork Guadalupe tributaries may see a quick rise that could result in a 2 to 3 foot rise in the river around Hunt. A flood warning for minor flooding around Hunt will be issued shortly,” another NWS alert read.

The flash flood warning for the area, which includes Camp Mystic, an all-girls Christian summer camp, along the swollen Guadalupe River, intensified safety concerns and compelled the withdrawal of first responders from immediate danger zones.

President Donald Trump signed a major disaster declaration for Texas that unlocks further governmental assistance Sunday morning.

At least 68 deaths have been counted in Kerr County alone. Many of those killed were children attending camps along the Guadalupe River, including Camp Mystic where 10 remain missing along with one counselor.

The region faced up to 12 inches of rainfall, causing rivers to rise suddenly—the Guadalupe River surged by 26 feet in just 45 minutes, according to emergency management officials.

Hundreds of rescue workers from multiple agencies participated in the continued search and recovery operations over the weekend. The sudden flash flood warning issued for the Camp Mystic vicinity compelled many to pull back, disrupting the already complex operations.

Local officials urged all residents near the Guadalupe River and adjoining creeks to seek higher ground pending further notice.

What People Are Saying

President Donald Trump Posted on Truth Social Sunday: “I just signed a Major Disaster Declaration for Kerr County, Texas, to ensure that our Brave First Responders immediately have the resources they need. These families are enduring an unimaginable tragedy, with many lives lost, and many still missing. The Trump Administration continues to work closely with State and Local Leaders. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem was on the ground yesterday with Governor Greg Abbott, who is working hard to help the people of his Great State. Our incredible U.S. Coast Guard, together with State First Responders, have saved more than 850 lives. GOD BLESS THE FAMILIES, AND GOD BLESS TEXAS!”

What Happens Next

Authorities are monitoring weather and river conditions before resuming full-scale rescue and recovery near Camp Mystic.

Federal aid and additional disaster response resources are scheduled to arrive, with local and state officials coordinating plans for survivor support and infrastructure restoration.
