Dodgers Predicted to Replace Max Muncy With $70M All-Star in Blockbuster Trade

The Los Angeles Dodgers got some bad news at third base just as it seemed their veteran starter was turning a corner.

After opening the year in a pronounced slump, Max Muncy began wearing prescription goggles and seemed to have unlocked some marked improvement at the plate. He had been hitting .308 with 12 homers and 48 RBI, the most in the majors, in the past 46 games before going down with a knee injury.

Muncy’s now expected to be out for at least six weeks and the Dodgers could be looking for an external addition before it’s too late. Zachary Howell of ClutchPoints predicted that would mean bringing in Colorado Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon in a blockbuster trade that would offload pitcher Dustin May in exchange.

“Los Angeles does not need much from McMahon, but he is a far better option at third than Tommy Edman,” Howell noted. “Making the most of him in their push for back-to-back titles could push them over the top. … A deal like this shows faith in (manager Dave) Roberts and his roster while giving the Rockies a future ace that can lead them back to relevancy.”

If the Dodgers do swing a deal to bring in McMahon, it would demonstrate their faith that he will be a long-term infield option. He is in the fourth year of a $70 million contract and is owed $16 million in both 2026 and 2027.

It would also signal that the Dodgers believe McMahon can return to the All-Star form he demonstrated last year. So far this season he is slashing just .211/.312/.376, figures that are far below his career averages across the board.

But if the Dodgers do see their division rival’s infielder as a necessary upgrade with Muncy sidelined, this proposed one-for-one deal could be enough to bring him to Los Angeles.
