HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Monday will be a busy day at the Madison County Courthouse as two people charged with capital murder in unrelated cases are set to appear.

Jamarious Beatty, 25, is charged with capital murder for the shooting death of Isaac Augusta Young in July 2023.

Young was found shot in a parking lot off Highway 53 in Huntsville. He was taken to Huntsville Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The Huntsville Police Department said they believe the shooting happened after a fight. Court records state that Beatty claims the shooting was in self-defense.

Madison County Judge Donna Pate granted Beatty a “Stand Your Ground” immunity hearing in February but denied the request that Beatty was immune from prosecution.

Beatty filed an appeal with the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals. However, that appeal was denied as the higher court said he filed it in an untimely manner following Judge Pate’s ruling.

Attorney Bruce Gardner represents Beatty. The trial is set to begin at 9 a.m.

Shamekia Strickland will also appear at the Madison County Courthouse on Monday in Judge Christian Comer’s courtroom. Strickland is charged with the 2021 stabbing of 76-year-old Jessie Suttle in his apartment bedroom on Laurelwood Lane.

An indictment from a Madison County grand jury said Strickland stabbed Suttle while committing a robbery at the apartment.

Strickland is set to appear for a plea docket ahead of her July 21 trial.

According to court records, the State will not seek the death penalty against her.
