The Philadelphia Phillies have a bit of an issue at third base. While Alec Bohm has been serviceable, he hasn’t been tremendous, and the Phillies need more tremendous bats in their lineup or they’re going to fall flat.
This could lead the Phillies to look for a star third baseman at the trade deadline.
Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer recently pitched a trade idea that would send Bohm, Taijaun Walker, and Mick Abel to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for Alex Bregman.
“Though the Phillies were not in the final running for Bregman in free agency, there was some local buzz about the idea amid an uncertain situation at third base,” Rymer wrote. “Yes, Bohm was an All-Star in 2024. But he also suffered a huge drop in production in the second half and found himself riding the pine at one point in the playoffs. And so far, 2025 hasn’t been much better for him.
“He is hitting a solid .280 through 82 games, but with only a .390 slugging percentage and no real baserunning value to speak of. He is also down to minus-48 Defensive Runs Saved for his career. The Phillies should want to do better at the hot corner, and going all-in on a potentially very-short-term upside play on Bregman would fit perfectly with where they are in their contention window.”
This trade could make sense for both sides.
First of all, it gives the Phillies a win-now option at the hot corner. The loss of Abel hurts, but they have Andrew Painter to replace him. Adding Bregman puts them near the top of the league as favorites to win the World Series.
For the Red Sox, it gives them a solid option at third base, a decent option in Walker on the mound, and a great young pitcher in Abel. Boston gets better in the long run while taking a very slight step back right now.
If the Red Sox were going to shop Bregman this season, this is the exact kind of deal that would make sense.
