The Chicago Cubs met up with the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field in a matchup with NL Central division implications.

Chicago’s offense exploded to the tune of 11 runs on 13 hits and while those numbers are impressive, the Cubs did something they’ve never done in the history of their franchise.

Carson Kelly, Michael Busch, Pete Crow-Armstrong, Dansby Swanson and Seiya Suzuki combined to mash eight home runs, the most ever in a game for Chicago.

Kelly, Swanson and Suzuki hit one each, Crow-Armstrong hit two and Busch had the first three home run game of his career.

Suzuki and Crow-Armstrong got things started with back-to-back home runs with two outs in the bottom of the first inning. Busch and Kelly followed suit in the bottom of the second inning with back-to-back home runs of their own.

Crow-Armstrong and Busch each homered again in the third inning to give the Cubs six home runs through the first three innings of the game.

The bats were quiet until the bottom of the seventh inning when Chicago went back-to-back for the third time in the game. That time, it was Dansby Swanson’s first home run of the day, followed by the third of the day for Busch.

Busch’s third home run set the franchise record for home runs in a game Chicago, and he became the third Cubs player to hit three home runs in a single game against the Cardinals. According to Cubs insider Jesse Rogers, all three of those instances have come on July 4.
