HUNTSVILLE, Ala (WHNT) — In this week’s Next Question, we are sitting down with Huntsville Police Chief Kirk Giles.
Our conversation touches on a wide range of topics, including the challenges and changes that come with being the police chief.
“I have a passion to want to help others, which we call it a servant heart,” Giles said.
Giles’ heart has been in law enforcement since 1977, when he was hired by the Huntsville Police Department on Halloween.
He got his first taste of fighting crime while in high school when he volunteered with a program called police rangers.
“We still have that program today,” Giles said. “And once I got involved, I thought, wow, this is pretty cool. This is something I want to do.”
This career path would take him through the ranks of HPD, eventually becoming chief in 2022.
Protecting officers’ mental health, losing an officer, and crimes involving children are just some of the challenges of being a chief.
“When I first came to work up here, there was not a cage in the car to separate the prisoner from the officer,” Giles said. “There have been a lot of advances, not only in technology, but certainly in the law itself. It’s really changed a lot.”
The chief said recruiting new officers can be tough, especially with high-profile incidents of police misconduct, and the defund the police movement.
However, Giles is grateful for his career in law enforcement because it led him to find the love of his life.
“She was the first ticket manager,” said Giles. “And I was a cop working in traffic. And because we had to get the traffic out at the ballgames every night, we met that way.”
This chance meeting led to marriage, kids, and grandkids.
Giles remains uncertain as to when he will hang up his badge for good.
“I don’t know what that answer is,” he said. “I truly don’t, but I’m blessed to be here.”
