A man and his mother were arrested in connection with the murder of a woman in Riverside County.
The suspects, both Coachella residents, were identified as Mario Morales Jr., 25, and his mother, Juanna De Morales, 55, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office.
On June 26, deputies responded to a possible homicide at a residence in the 84000 block of Manila Avenue in Indio shortly after 7 a.m.
Authorities found the victim, Alexis Cano, 24, suffering from a gunshot wound inside the home. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators determined that the deadly shooting stemmed from a domestic disturbance and Morales was identified as the primary suspect.
According to news outlet KESQ, Morales allegedly told his family about the murder later that night. He reportedly asked his mother to drive him to Mexico and was later dropped off at a friend’s ranch in Mexico.
The next day, he was located by Mexican authorities at the ranch and taken into custody, KESQ reports. He was transported to the Calexico Port of Entry, where Riverside County deputies arrested him for murder.
His mother was reportedly stopped at the border while trying to re-enter the U.S. and was arrested for accessory to murder.
On July 1, both suspects were charged for their alleged involvement in the crime. Both pleaded not guilty. A court hearing is scheduled for July 11.
Morales is being held on $5 million bail and his mother is being held on $1 million bail.
The case remains under investigation. Anyone with additional information is asked to call Investigator D. Hernandez or Investigator G. Gonzalez at 951-955-2777.
