PHOENIX — Several Democratic lawmakers representing Arizona in Congress slammed the U.S. House of Representatives for passing a massive budget bill on Thursday.

Rep. Yassamin Ansari, who is in her first term representing Arizona’s Congressional District 3, called the legislation heartless.

“Today I voted no on Trump and Republicans’ heartless budget bill that will rip away healthcare from over 365,000 people in Arizona,” Ansari said in a Thursday announcement.

Why are top Arizona Democrats opposed to Trump’s massive budget bill?

President Donald Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill” consists of 887 pages outlining spending cuts, tax breaks, military spending, money for deportations and more.

If Trump signs the bill into law, 11.8 million Americans would become uninsured by 2034 and 3 million more wouldn’t qualify for food stamps, according to the Associated Press.

“These cuts to programs that serve the most vulnerable among us don’t help the average American,” Ansari said. “They hurt the poorest to benefit the very richest: Trump and his donors.”

Republican lawmakers rushed to move the bill through Congress after Trump set a firm deadline of July 4, the Associated Press reported.

“This bill represents the largest wealth transfer from the poor to the rich,” Ansari said. “It’s all so unconscionable.”

Massive budget bill condemned by Greg Stanton

U.S. Rep. Greg Stanton of Arizona has been an outspoken critic of Trump’s proposed cuts. He reiterated his stance in a Thursday statement.

“This is a gut punch to the people of Arizona. Republicans’ budget bill is a giveaway to the wealthiest Americans and largest corporations at the expense of middle and working class families,” Stanton said.

Trump signing the bill into law would be devastating for Arizona’s Medicaid system, which is known at the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS), he added.

“Republicans are slashing federal funding for AHCCCS, Arizona’s largest and most effective anti-poverty program, and stripping more than 350,000 Arizonans of their ability to see a primary care doctor,” Stanton said.

Critics say massive budget bill could hurt Arizonans’ access to Medicaid

Additionally, a statement from Arizona House Democratic Leader Oscar De Los Santos slammed the legislation as the “Big, Ugly Bill.”

“We are outraged but not surprised that Republicans in Congress chose Trump and their billionaire donors over their own communities,” de los Santos said in a statement.

“The Big Ugly Bill will cripple and close our rural hospitals, healthcare costs will skyrocket for everyone,” De Los Santos said. “It endangers our developmentally disabled communities that rely on AHCCCS.”
