HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Many dogs at Huntsville Animal Services are facing euthanasia tonight if more shelter space does not open up.
Huntsville Animal Services said they can hold 75 dogs, and on Wednesday, they were at 105.
“We are still fighting,” HAS Director John Fischer said.”We’re going to still do everything we can, but we are at a point where we need to start having real, transparent conversations about euthanasia of animals simply because we’re out of space.”
Fischer said they are at 140 percent capacity and cannot continue at this rate.
“Our shelter staff are working double time because there are dogs that are in kennels designed for one dog, and they now have two dogs,” he said.
The staff is working hard to keep the kennels safe, clean and presentable, but the overcrowding has a negative impact on the animals as well.
“You have to take into account the welfare of the animal,” Fischer said. “They’re in a much smaller space, they’re not getting to go outside as much because there’s just that much more work to do.”
Here’s how you can help:
“The most impactful thing we can do is anything that will empty a kennel,” he said.
That can look like adopting or fostering. If you are not ready to welcome a fur baby into your home, there are other options too.
“Sharing our posts on social media because it’s an additional pair of eyes,” he said.
They could also use food donations or people to volunteer to walk the dogs.
Fischer said your impact could truly save their life.
They are waiving all adoption fees for their dogs.
If you surrendered your animal because of financial reasons, Huntsville Animal Services encourages you to reach out because they are happing to help you if it means getting your dog back.
