EXCLUSIVE: SpectreVision, the production company of Elijah Wood, Daniel Noah, and Lawrence Inglee, has partnered with Norwegian filmmaker Patrik Syversen on Dawning, a genre-bending feature that has wrapped production.
Described as a Scandinavian prestige drama filtered through a horror prism, the story follows three sisters who have withdrawn to their family’s vacation home in the wake of the youngest sister’s second suicide attempt. When news reaches them that their abusive mother has passed, the two elder sisters decide not to tell the youngest, to spare her the burden. Things begin to unravel when a mysterious man shows up on the property, shifting the siblings’ perspective from one of introspection and analysis to something a lot more primal. Check out a first-look still above.
Dawning stars top Norwegian talent Kathrine Thorborg Johansen (Canneseries winner Power Play), Marte Magnusdotter Solem (Karlovy Vary winner Lovable), frequent Dag Johan Haugerud collaborator Thorbjørn Harr, and Steinar Klouman Hallert (Kristoffer Borgli’s Sick of Myself).
Inglee (Swiss Army Man), Noah and Wood (Mandy) exec produced through SpectreVision, with Syversen and cinematographer Andreas Johannessen producing through their newly established production company Planete Sauvage, in collaboration with Einar Film’s Kristin Emblem (Handling the Undead). The film will be released in the Nordics in late 2025, with details on an international rollout to be announced at a later date.
In a statement on their new project, the SpectreVision partners told Deadline, “We were completely knocked-out by Dawning. The film shows a masterful command of its material, creating a fearless tone that is entirely its own. Bold. Riveting. Poignant. Terrifying. We’re grateful for the opportunity to work together on Dawning, and can’t wait to see what comes next from this team! Patrik enters the next phase of his career as a major new voice in international cinema.”
Said Syversen, “It’s an absolute honor to team up with SpectreVision. Their sensibility, love for cinema and quest for the subversive and idiosyncratic makes them a perfect fit for Dawning, a deeply personal film that in many ways feels like a new beginning for me as a filmmaker. I can’t think of a better company to start that journey with.”
Syversen’s previous credits include the cult horror Rovdyr, indie drama Det som en gang var, and limited series Kieler Street. Golden Frog-winner Johannessen recently lensed SpectreVision’s upcoming Dev Patel starrer Rabbit Trap.
SpectreVision is known for titles like A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, the Farsi-language, black-and-white vampire flick launching the career of filmmaker Ana Lily Amirpour, as well as Mandy starring Nicolas Cage, The Greasy Strangler, the Daniels’ Swiss Army Man, Oscar nominee The Messenger, Emmy nominee The Tale, and the DICE/Golden Joystick-nominated video game Transference for Ubisoft.
The company announced the launch of SpectreVision Artists, a new management arm led by by Antonio D’Intino and Christina Campagnola, in May. Syversen is repped by EML Entertainment.
