Angelenos will once again have one less city-run pool to visit this summer since the historic Griffith Park Pool is slated for a $28 million renovation.

The pool hasn’t been filled since 2020. It was scheduled to reopen in June 2022, but city workers found that the pool had a cracked foundation, as first reported by news site The Eastsider.

The renovation project aims to modernize the aging facility.

According to a report, the project is currently in the pre-design phase, with a formal kickoff meeting scheduled for December 2024.

The overhaul includes a full structural retrofit and interior reconstruction of the two-story Spanish Colonial Revival-style pool house.

Plans call for updating the first- and second-floor interiors, along with expanding and modernizing the changing areas. Family restrooms and unisex stalls will be added to both the men’s and women’s changing areas, while enclosed and potentially heated deck shower areas will be constructed.

The existing pool will be replaced with a new 25-yard-by-50-meter competition pool, along with a 25-yard-by-25-yard splash pad for recreational use.

The renovation will also improve accessibility, with an ADA-compliant path connecting nearby bus stops on Los Feliz Boulevard and Riverside Drive to the pool and adjacent playground.

Construction is expected to begin in September 2026 and is anticipated to be completed by March 2028.

The project, managed by Alex Ngo of the Bureau of Engineering, falls within Council District 4, represented by Councilmember Nithya Raman. No contractor has been selected yet.

In the meantime, residents in the area can visit city-run pools in Echo Park, Hollywood and Glassell Park to beat the heat.
