Sedgwick, Maine | $499,000

A circa 1800 farmhouse, on 10.5 acres

This three-bedroom, one-and-a-half-bathroom home’s recent updates have been featured in magazines and on “In With The Old,” a Magnolia Network TV show. The furnishings are included in the sale. The home is less than 10 minutes, by car, from Blue Hill, a small town with a grocery co-op, several coffee shops and restaurants, and a park overlooking Mt. Desert Narrows. The E.B. White House, the longtime home of the author now open to the public, is also 10 minutes away. Acadia National Park is an hour away.

Both Bangor and Bar Harbor are an hour’s drive, while Augusta is two hours away and Portland is three hours away.

Size: 2,173 square feet

Price per square foot: $230

Indoors: A long driveway leads to this home’s front covered front porch and entrance.

Inside is a foyer with wide-plank floors, and from there a staircase rises to the second story. Off one side of the foyer is the living room, where a nonfunctioning fireplace is finished with a wood mantel. Off the other side is a den with porch-facing windows and direct access to the home’s full bathroom.

Behind the den is a dining room with a brass chandelier. The dining and living rooms have access to the kitchen, where the countertops are Carrara marble and the backsplash is made of Moroccan zellige tile. Appliances include an AGA range and a Bosch dishwasher, and the kitchen has space for a second dining area. A pantry off the kitchen has floral wallpaper and a mudroom with multiple closets leads to the back patio.

Sleeping quarters are upstairs, the primary bedroom is off the top of the steps. A wood beam runs across its ceiling and a copper soaking tub sits in one corner. A half bathroom is next door and across the hall are two more bedrooms, both large enough for queen-size beds. At the end of the hall is a smaller room with wood paneling painted white.

Outdoor space: Outside the mudroom is a bluestone patio that faces the backyard, which has level land surrounded by mature trees. Adjacent to the main house is a barn with new floors, and four parked cars can fit in the driveway.

Taxes: $1,957 (estimated)

St. Paul, Minn. | $524,900

A Foursquare house built in 1922, on 0.1 acres

This three-bedroom, two-bathroom house has belonged to the same owner for the last 39 years and much of its original character remains intact. The neighborhood is home to several colleges and universities, including Macalester College, a 15-minute walk, and the University of St. Thomas, which takes five minutes by car. A grocery store, a Vietnamese restaurant and a record shop are all within walking distance.

Downtown St. Paul is 15 minutes away by car, and downtown Minneapolis takes 20 minutes.

Size: 1,808 square feet

Price per square foot: $290

Indoors: A brick path runs from the sidewalk to the home’s porch, where a door with inset glass panels opens to the living room. There are original, unpainted wood beams and trim and a fireplace with a brick surround.

Off one side of the living room is a sunroom with three walls of windows, and off the other side is a formal dining room with maple floors. A long cabinet with drawers and space for a wine collection is built in.

The kitchen is beyond the dining room and has cherry wood cabinets and stainless steel appliances. A garden window is above the sink and steps lead to the finished lower level.

A wood staircase in the living room goes up to the second floor, which has three bedrooms and one bathroom. In the primary bedroom, which is big enough for a queen-size bed and a desk, windows are covered with wood shutters. The bathroom walls are painted peach, with white wainscoting below. There’s a combined tub and shower and a porcelain pedestal sink. One of the other bedrooms on this level is painted blue, and the other has windows overlooking treetops.

The lower level has a built-in bar, penny tile floors, its own brick-clad fireplace, a full bathroom and a washer and dryer.

Outdoor space: A brick patio behind the house has space for dining and grilling, and the grassy backyard has raspberry bushes on one side and a garden with raised planter beds at its center. There’s a detached two-car garage with a second story that could serve as home office.

Taxes: $6,552 (estimated)

Norfolk, Va. | $490,000

A Craftsman house built in 1912, on 0.1 acres

This four-bedroom, two-and-a-half bathroom house is in Norfolk’s Larchmont neighborhood, a few blocks from the Lafayette River and about a mile from Old Dominion University. A small waterfront park is a five-minute walk away, as is a public library. The Elizabeth River Trail begins nearby and the Virginia Zoo takes 10 minutes by car.

Driving downtown takes around 15 minutes, as does driving to Naval Station Norfolk. Virginia Beach is 30 minutes away and Richmond is a two-hour drive.

Size: 2,097 square feet

Price per square foot: $234

Indoors: From the sidewalk, wood steps lead to a wraparound porch.

The front door opens to a foyer with original pocket doors that slide open to the living room. Wainscoting painted white lines the lower half of the walls and tucked into a corner is a gas fireplace with a red brick surround.

A den off the living room could be as a formal dining room, and a bathroom with a walk-in shower is also off this part of the house. The kitchen at the back of this level has custom-built cabinets, stainless steel appliances and a center island with a wood countertop and room for three bar stools.

A staircase from the foyer leads to the second floor. Off the upper landing is the primary bedroom with white shuttered windows and a door opening to a walk-in closet that has built-in storage. On the other side of the closet is a half bathroom. Another bedroom off the second-floor hallway is painted green and fits a queen-size bed. The full bathroom on this level has a claw foot soaking tub.

One third-floor bedroom faces the street and the other faces the backyard. Both have pitched ceilings. The partially-finished basement has a washer and dryer, and a sink.

Outdoor space: A deck behind the house is spacious enough for separate dining and sitting areas, and is shaded by mature trees. A fire pit is in one corner of the deck, and steps descend to a paved patio with a wood pergola. A detached garage holds one car, with room for another in the driveway.

Taxes: $5,316 (estimated)
