Yankees Land $66 Million All-Star Slugger in 1-for-1 Trade Idea

The New York Yankees’ infield has not been great this year. DJ LeMahieu has been the primary second baseman since his return from the injured list.

LeMahieu playing second base means Jazz Chisholm Jr. is playing at third base. However, he is not as strong a defender there. Meanwhile, LeMahieu is struggling defensively and is slashing .239/.312/.319. The Yankees could benefit from adding a better bat to the infield, and preferably a third baseman, so that Chisholm can go back to second base.

Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter proposed this trade that brings Eugenio Suárez to the Yankees from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for a prospect:

  • Yankees receive: 3B Eugenio Suárez
  • Diamondbacks receive: Carlos Lagrange (Yankees No. 17 prospect)

The Diamondbacks may be the team to watch at this year’s deadline. They entered Tuesday in fourth place in the National League West, and could soon fall out of the wild card race. Injuries to Corbin Burnes and Corbin Carroll have put them in a difficult spot.

If they do become sellers, Suárez could be one of the first players to be dealt. He signed a seven-year, $66 million deal in 2018, and is playing on a $15 million club option this year. He is 33 years old and will hit the market after this season.

Suárez has a .257/.324/.570 slash line this year. He has hit 26 home runs and has a NL-leading 69 RBIs. He could slot in as the everyday third baseman in the Bronx. He is a former All-Star and has hit over 300 career home runs.
