President Donald Trump and Elon Musk are already on opposite sides of an election set for next year.

Musk said on Monday evening that he would support Rep. Thomas Massie’s reelection campaign, later adding in the early hours of Tuesday morning that he would donate to the Kentucky Republican as well.

Trump and his political operation are trying to defeat the libertarian-minded congressman after he voted against the House version of the “Big Beautiful Bill” and cosponsored a resolution to restrict Trump’s war powers after recent strikes on Iran.

“New poll: Anybody I Endorse beats Thomas Massie of Kentucky by 25 points,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Tuesday. “Get ready. Massie is a very bad guy!”

Massie said he voted against the megabill because it would add trillions of dollars to the deficit over the next decade — the same reason that Musk has criticized the bill.

“I’m extremely thankful to have Elon Musk’s financial assistance to continue my mission as an independent voice in Congress for my constituents,” Massie wrote on X.

Trump’s political operation has yet to recruit a primary challenger, and it’s unclear how much money Musk, the world’s richest man, might be willing to invest in supporting Massie.

Musk said on Monday that he would seek to defeat Republicans who vote for the megabill in primaries next year, later floating the idea of starting a new third party.

He has previously said that he would be spending less money on politics going forward, but that was before his feud with Trump began in June.
