Every month, streaming services add movies and TV shows to their libraries. Here are our picks for some of July’s most promising new titles. (Note: Streaming services occasionally change schedules without giving notice. For more recommendations on what to stream, sign up for our Watching newsletter here.)

New to Amazon Prime Video

‘Ballard’ Season 1

Starts streaming: July 9

A spinoff of a spinoff, this cop drama stars Maggie Q as Renée Ballard, a dogged Los Angeles police detective first introduced in Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch novels. Ballard made her TV debut in Season 3 of “Bosch: Legacy,” the follow-up to the popular crime series “Bosch.” In the new show, Ballard is assigned to lead a new team consisting mostly of volunteers and police department reserves, tasked to investigate some of the city’s oldest, coldest cases. As often happens in these situations, sometimes the trail of clues leads to some dangerous places, where the powerful people dwell. The detective has to rely on her wits and determination — along with some occasional help from the now-retired cop Bosch (Titus Welliver), who knows a lot about defying authority.

‘Monster Island’

Starts streaming: July 25

Though its title may conjure up images of Godzilla and King Kong, this gritty low-budget monster movie actually features a human-scaled nemesis: a ferocious fish-man known as the Orang Ikan, which resembles the title beastie from “Creature From the Black Lagoon.” Written and directed by Mike Wiluan, “Monster Island” is set during World War II, and has Callum Woodhouse playing a captured British soldier and Dean Fujioka playing a Japanese soldier. When the two are shipwrecked, they have to put aside their prejudices and work together to survive the predator that is stalking them both. Working with little funds and just a few locations — plus one nifty-looking creature costume — Wiluan delivers the kind of intense action and moments of gory horror that genre fans enjoy.

‘Foundation’ Season 3

Starts streaming: July 11

In its third season, Apple TV+’s ambitious, expansive adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s “Foundation” stories and novellas reaches the part of the saga many fans consider the most exciting. Pilou Asbaek joins the cast as The Mule, a manipulative mutant who takes advantage of a declining galactic empire to seize control of several planets and set himself up as a destructive despot. The Mule proves a worthy adversary not just to the empire’s remaining aristocrats (including the egomaniacal Brother Day, played by Lee Pace) but to the followers of Hari Seldon (Jared Harris), a visionary who uses math and technology both to predict the future and to preserve humanity’s essence. As always, this version of “Foundation” balances the books’ philosophical conversations about fate and freedom with rousing science-fiction spectacle.

‘Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story’

Starts streaming: July 11

National Geographic’s TV division is loading up on shark-themed programming in July, with multiple new documentaries and docuseries becoming available on Disney+ and Hulu. Movie buffs should be especially interested in this salute to the director Steven Spielberg’s classic 1975 adaptation of Peter Benchley’s novel “Jaws,” a thrilling shark-hunt story that became Hollywood’s first real summer blockbuster. Directed by the accomplished documentarian Laurent Bouzereau, “Jaws @ 50” reflects on the arduous process of shooting the film, which in no way looked like a hit back when Spielberg was going way over budget and over schedule. Bouzereau also considers the picture’s lasting impact, via testimonials from fans like Jordan Peele, Emily Blunt, James Cameron and Guillermo del Toro.

‘Such Brave Girls’ Season 2

Starts streaming: July 7

Kat Sadler created and stars in this dark comedy, which takes a frank and funny look at mental illness and narcissism. Sadler plays Josie, who makes nearly everyone she meets uncomfortable with her openness about her depression and her desires. Josie lives with her boy-crazy sister Billie (played by Lizzie Davidson, Sadler’s real-life sister) and their mother, Deb (Louise Brealey), who worries that her own attempts to find love in middle-age are being sabotaged by her troublesome daughters. Season 1 of “Such Brave Girls” won awards in Britain but did not make much of a ripple here in the United States. The buzz has been building, though, which may bring Season 2 the kind of attention this show deserves.

‘Washington Black’

Starts streaming: July 23

Based on Esi Edugyan’s 2018 novel, this historical adventure-fantasy is set in the early 19th century and follows an enslaved Barbadian named George Washington Black (a.k.a. Wash), played by Eddie Karanja as a preteen and Ernest Kingsley Jr. as a young adult. While in the employ of the Wilde family — the cruel Erasmus (Julian Rhind-Tutt), the troubled Philip (Chris Patrick-Simpson) and the kindhearted Titch (Tom Ellis) — the bright and creative Wash learns about science and aeronautics, aiding him on what becomes a country-hopping journey. The TV series jumps back and forth between scenes from Wash’s boyhood and his adulthood, when he is a fugitive trying to live quietly in Halifax under the tutelage of two other scientists: the Black Canadian Medwin Harris (Sterling K. Brown) and the Englishman G.M. Goff (Rupert Graves), whose daughter Tanna (Iola Evans) helps Wash imagine a more hopeful future.

‘Dear Ms.: A Revolution in Print’

Starts streaming: July 2

This feature film covers the heyday of Gloria Steinem’s groundbreaking feminist magazine, Ms., taking an honest look at how the publication pushed the women’s movement forward while sometimes struggling to represent its readers’ diverse perspectives. Combining new interviews with fascinating archival footage — in which prominent chauvinists sometimes smugly dismiss the magazine and its ideology — “Dear Ms.” is a reminder that many of the conversations around gender roles that dominate the discourse today have actually been simmering for decades. The documentary was co-directed by Salima Koroma, Alice Gu and Cecilia Aldarondo, each of whom handles a different section, considering such hot-button issues as intersectionality, sexuality and the importance of male allies.

‘Sinners’

Starts streaming: July 4

As we move into the second half of 2025, many publications are posting their lists of the year’s best movies so far. One of the most frequently mentioned films is “Sinners,” the writer-director Ryan Coogler’s creative and poignant reimagining of a vampire story. Michael B. Jordan plays a dual role as Smoke and Stack, identical twins who left their Mississippi town to fight in World War I, before becoming notorious Chicago gangsters. When they return home to open a juke joint, the brothers quickly realize that the powers-that-be make it difficult for Black people to earn enough money to support Black-owned businesses. When some literal bloodsuckers show up — gathering around the bar on its raucous opening night, with fangs bared — Smoke and Stack and their clientele find themselves fighting not just for their lives but their right to exist.

‘Billy Joel: And So It Goes’

Starts streaming: July 18

Billy Joel recently canceled his entire upcoming tour because of health issues; but while his fans wait for the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer to recover, this two-part, five-hour documentary should remind them why they love him in the first place. Directed and produced by Susan Lacy and Jessica Levin, “And So It Goes” tells the story of a Long Island kid who overcame a lot of insecurity — some of it provoked by dismissive rock critics — to record a string of hit singles and albums that skillfully and energetically blended different American pop genres. Boosted by glowing testimonials from peers like Bruce Springsteen and Jackson Browne, this film puts Joel’s career into context, covering his sometimes messy personal life, the vicissitudes of the music business, and his insistence on following his muse, despite the doubters.

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Season 3

Starts streaming: July 17

The recent announcement that the “Star Trek” prequel series “Strange New Worlds” will be ending after Season 5 has cast a gloomy shadow over this month’s arrival of Season 3. But take heart, Trek fans: There is still a lot of “Strange New Worlds” in the pipeline, starting with these 10 new episodes. The show has been a welcome throwback to the 1960s TV version of this franchise, with appearances by classic characters like Spock, Uhura, Scotty and Kirk — all in their early Starfleet days. Like the original “Star Trek,” this series has been committed to presenting entertaining single-episode stories that combine science-fiction adventure with a variety of other genres, from mystery to horror to comedy.
