The 10 best movies coming to Netflix in July

Get ready for sequels from “The Old Guard” and “Happy Gilmore” on Netflix this month.

Here are 10 of the best movies to watch on the streaming giant in July.

“Captain Phillips” (July 1)

This 2014 best picture Oscar nominee stars Tom Hanks as the captain of a large cargo ship that’s hijacked by Somali pirates.

Based on true events, director Paul Greengrass heightens the drama by shooting the movie in a gritty handheld style to give it a documentary-like feel. As always, Hanks delivers a captivating performance.

“The Karate Kid” (July 1)

You can’t go wrong with this 1980s classic, which stars Ralph Macchio as a teen who moves from New Jersey to LA and learns karate from his building’s handyman, Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita), to stop being bullied.

The movie would spawn sequels, a reboot starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan, and the popular “Cobra Kai” spin-off series (all of which are also available now on Netflix).

“Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” (July 1)

This month, you can check out several titles from the “M:I” franchise, including the first three movies and 2011’s “Ghost Protocol,” but let’s spotlight one more title available: 2015’s “Rogue Nation.”

Tom Cruise is in top form here, including hanging from the outside of a giant plane as it takes off at the start of the movie. This also marks the addition of Rebecca Ferguson to the franchise, which spices things up.

“The Notebook” (July 1)

Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams are perfectly cast in this Nicholas Sparks adaptation, which chronicles the love story of two people over decades.

Since its release in 2004, the movie has become a beloved modern-day classic thanks not just to the red-hot chemistry between Gosling and McAdams but also to its surprising twist at the end.

“White Chicks” (July 1)

Out of all the Wayans brothers’ comedies released in the 2000s, this one has had the longest shelf life.

Shawn and Marlon Wayans play FBI agents who go deep undercover to get to the bottom of a kidnapping case by dressing up as the two white hotel heiresses who are the targets.

“The Old Guard 2” (July 2)

This sequel to the hit 2020 Netflix original action movie follows Charlize Theron’s immortal warrior, Andy, as she takes on a villain played by Uma Thurman, who is also immortal.

“A Star Is Born” (July 8)

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga are fantastic in this heartfelt story that has been remade several times. It focuses on a washed-up musician (Cooper) who discovers a singer (Gaga) and, as they fall in love, helps her become a superstar.

Cooper and Gaga don’t just give amazing performances but also deliver one of the best movie songs in recent memory with “Shallow.“

“Mad Max: Fury Road” (July 9)

34 years after “Mad Max: The Road Warrior,” director George Miller returned to his beloved franchise set in a postapocalyptic wasteland and delivered another action classic.

Tom Hardy stars as the loner Max, who finds himself entangled in a power struggle over gas when he teams with Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) to take down the evil Immortan Joe.

“Mamma Mia!” (July 16)

Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgård round out a fantastic cast for this hit musical based on the songs from ABBA.

“Happy Gilmore 2” (July 25)

Adam Sandler, 29 years later, will once again play one of his most memorable characters.

Hockey fanatic turned golf pro Happy Gilmore (Sandler) returns to bring more havoc to the golf course with his super long drives and outlandish antics. Also returning from the original are Julie Bowen, Ben Stiller, and Christopher McDonald (Shooter McGavin).

Viewers can also expect appearances from Bad Bunny, Post Malone, and Travis Kelce.
