It’s not what you wear, it’s how you wear it. Amid the ever-gaudier displays of wealth among the moneyed elite of New York, Mary-Kate Olsen has drawn a line in the sand, literally, stepping out onto the beaches of the Hamptons in sweatpants and flip-flops, because when you’re on vacation, you’re allowed to dress like you’re on vacation.

The reclusive actor turned designer was just spotted strolling through a farm wearing an oversized T-shirt with an “L.A.” pattern (!), sunglasses, baseball hat, loose-fitting black sweats, sandals, and carrying a canvas tote bag. Take a look at the ‘fit, here. She and twin sister Ashley are rarely photographed these days, but just a year ago the two masterminds behind The Row were spotted braving the heat in, you’ll never guess…sweatpants. Signature style alert.

In a 2021 interview, the Y2k icons opened up about their step back from the spotlight. “We were raised to be discreet people,” Mary-Kate Olsen explained. “I think that potentially that’s just our aesthetic, our design preference,” Ashley added about The Row’s modest look. “But that doesn’t mean that we don’t also appreciate something truly ornate or maximal. Sometimes a collection even starts quite like that, and then gets pared down. It doesn’t always start from that simplistic place.”

“We didn’t want to be in front of [The Row], we didn’t necessarily even want to let people know it was us,” Ashley added. “It was really about the product, to the point where we were like: Who could we get to front this so that we don’t have to?” Mary-Kate said that she and Ashley are “very much perfectionists,” saying, “I think the reason we do fashion is to constantly try to fix our imperfections. And you have next season to do that. But it’s also our job to find every imperfection in there to make sure that we’re constantly pushing ourselves and training our eyes and making sure everyone is served.”
