DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — Decatur City Councilman Hunter Pepper announced on Monday to News 19 that he will not seek reelection.
Pepper was 18 years old when he was elected to the city council in 2020, becoming the city’s youngest-ever councilman.
During his tenure, Pepper has been part of several controversies in the City of Decatur.
On June 23, Pepper withdrew his candidacy for mayor in an apparent stunt to prove a point.
Pepper said now is the time for someone else to run District 4.
“I believe in being a good leader, and good leaders know when it’s time to step away. They understand that you are no longer effective in the leadership role that you are in,” said Pepper. “A good leader will understand that you no longer bring something to the table in an area that you care about or something that you love, or you just can’t bring something to the table for that anymore.”
Pepper said that he enrolled in college, and for the past several months, he was under contract to work for the Department of Indian Health Service, working in disaster deployment for the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
“I believe that District 4 will be in good hands, and I will always call Decatur my home,” said Pepper.
Pepper told News 19 that he may think about another run in county government in the future.
The municipal elections in Decatur are set for Aug. 26.
