The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place late Saturday night in South Los Angeles, after officers observed a man walking in the street with a handgun and the man allegedly opened fire.

According to a preliminary statement released by the LAPD, the shooting occurred around 10:50 p.m. on June 28 in the Newton Division, near Avalon Boulevard and 42nd Place. Officers with the Newton Gang Enforcement Detail encountered a man, later identified as 35-year-old Ismael Hernandez, reportedly walking in the roadway while armed with a handgun.

As officers approached in their vehicle, Hernandez allegedly raised the firearm and discharged two rounds. In response, officers opened fire. Hernandez was struck by gunfire and fell to the ground. Police immediately began rendering medical aid until paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived on scene. He was then transported to a nearby hospital, where officials said he remains in stable condition.

No officers or bystanders were injured during the incident.

Investigators say the shooting followed a reported physical altercation involving Hernandez and another individual earlier that night. The victim in that confrontation told authorities that Hernandez had threatened him and fired a handgun in his presence prior to the arrival of police. The victim sustained a minor injury and was treated at the scene by paramedics.

A .38-caliber Rossi revolver, described by police as blue steel, was recovered at the scene and booked into evidence. Investigators confirmed the firearm’s cylinder contained five spent cartridge casings.

The LAPD’s Force Investigation Division is leading the investigation, which remains ongoing. Officials emphasized that the account released Monday is based on early findings, and that details may evolve as evidence is reviewed and additional witness interviews are conducted.
