James Gunn is addressing rumors that he is looking into casting Adria Arjona as Wonder Woman in the DC Universe.
In a new interview, the DC Studios co-head was asked about following Arjona on social media, which prompted fans to question if she would take on the superhero role.
“I follow Adria on Instagram but everybody came out [and said], ‘He just followed her, that means she’s Wonder Woman,’” Gunn said in an interview with Extra. “She’d be a great Wonder Woman, by the way.”
Gunn continued, “She was in a movie that I made seven years ago. We’ve been friends and have known each other since that time. I followed her then, I didn’t just follow her.”
The film Arjona starred in was 2016’s The Belko Experiment, directed by Greg McLean and written by James Gunn, who also produced it alongside DC Studios partner Peter Safran.
In an interview from earlier this year, Arjona was asked about fans casting her as Wonder Woman after they noticed Gunn followed her on social media.
“I love James Gunn,” Arjona said in an interview with CinemaBlend in April. “He gave me my first movie ever, which was like my first studio movie, so I owe him a lot.”
When asked if Gunn’s social media follow meant anything, Arjona said, “I don’t know,” and crossed her fingers.
The actress who gets cast in the Wonder Woman role would follow Gal Gadot who first played the role in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Gadot would reprise the role in the 2017 Wonder Woman feature film and 2017’s Justice League. Gadot would go on to play Diana Prince in the 2020 Wonder Woman 1984 sequel and have a cameo in 2023’s Shazam! Fury of Gods and The Flash.
Gunn’s DC Universe has already kicked off with the animated series Creature Commandos, but the first live-action film in the Chapter One: Gods and Monsters series will be released with Superman, starring David Corenswet in the title role.
