The Toronto Blue Jays are one of the more interesting teams in the American League this season. They’re a contending team with the potential to win a lot of games, but they have a lot of holes on the roster.
The biggest place the Blue Jays need to upgrade is the starting rotation. While it seemed like Toronto had a few quality options, some of the team’s pitchers have faltered early this year.
Sports Illustrated’s Nick Selbe recently predicted the Blue Jays would swing a trade for Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Seth Lugo this season.
“Lugo doesn’t strike out a ton of hitters, but he hasn’t posted an ERA above 3.60 since 2020 and quietly finished second in AL Cy Young voting last year while winning a Gold Glove to boot. The 35-year-old also fared well in two playoff starts last season. The converted reliever would improve just about any postseason rotation, and the Royals may feel obliged to deal Lugo ahead of his looming free agency if MLB‘s lowest-scoring offense doesn’t perk up in the coming weeks.”
Lugo has been excellent for the Royals this season. With Cole Ragans battling an injury and multiple other talented young pitchers on the Kansas City roster, Lugo could become expendable in the coming weeks.
The Blue Jays have the prospect capital to make a huge deal come to fruition. If Toronto is willing to cut ties with one or two top-ten-ranked prospects, a potential Lugo trade could be in the works before the trade deadline this season.
