It’s hard to imagine any dress stealing attention from Lauren Sánchez’s corseted mermaid bridal gown at her wedding to Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos, but the internet thinks Kylie Jenner gave it a try.
On June 27, the 27-year-old reality star joined a host of (somewhat random and controversial) celebrity wedding guests in Italy, including most of her very famous sisters and mom. As usual, the Kardashian-Jenners’ looks can best be classified from least to most likely to cause controversy and discourse.
On one end of the spectrum, you’ve got Kris Jenner and Kendall Jenner in more simple black dresses, though Kendall turned up the volume slightly with a sheer archival Tom Ford look and bold emerald Lorraine Schwartz jewelry. While Kendall did catch some flack in Vogue’s Instagram comments for wearing black, which some critics say should be reserved for funerals, many others thought she looked beautiful.
Somewhere in the middle, there’s Kim Kardashian in a body-hugging Versace gown—which most would probably consider a tame look for the Skims mogul—as well as Khloé Kardashian, who paired a pink sequins Tamara Ralph couture gown with a feathered robe and more Lorraine Schwartz jewels.
Then there’s Kylie Jenner. The youngest Kardashian-Jenner sister rode up to the nuptials in a corseted look by recent Khy collaborator Dilara Findikoglu, which featured an intricate skirt and matching bra with tiny black bows. Overall, the look feels like a high-fashion play on bridal shape-wear and undergarments…with emphasis on the word “bridal,” if you ask people on the Internet.
While the guests and hosts of this wedding drew plenty of criticism for their use of private planes and shows of exorbitant wealth, many social media users were focused on the color of Jenner’s ensemble. “Is it a guests wear white wedding?” one user asked in the comments of a Vogue Instagram post, while another wrote, “Who the f*ck wears white to a wedding.” That second comment received over a thousand likes.
While wearing white to a wedding is considered a taboo in Western cultures, it’s a particularly egregious crime on the Internet. Over on TikTok, celebs and everyday users alike face criticism for even thinking about wearing a color or pattern that could be mistaken for white in photographs—which appears to be the case with this look.
While some defended Kylie in the comments by suggesting the Dilara Findikoglu dress was silver, a rep for the brand Page Six the look is “icy blue.”
Whether the dress is white or “icy blue,” we’re talking about the woman who wore a latex dress to her nephew’s Bar Mitzvah. The entire Kardashian-Jenner crew is known for wearing controversial outfits to a variety of events, and Lauren Sánchez definitely knew that when she invited them.
