Now that summer is officially here, I’m ready to call it: The fisherman trend is the cutest (and most compelling) look of the season. Coastal hallmarks like stripes, shells, and boat shoes are popping up everywhere I look right now, from the office to city streets. And to be honest, I’m completely convinced. What better way is there to welcome the season ahead than by dressing like you live in a beach town?
It all started when brands like Miu Miu, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and Sacai showed preppy, maritime-influenced ensembles on their spring and summer runways. The resurgence of fisherman sandals and oversized button-downs has only added fuel to the fire—or, maybe, fish to the net. And now, most compellingly, nautical jewelry (think shells, fish, and coral) is enjoying a major moment after popping up at labels such as Zimmermann and Chloé. Clearly, the people yearn for a seaside escape. Why not go all in?

The term “fisherman” has become a sort of catchall on TikTok, encompassing pieces that sailors might actually wear (deck shoes, loose pants) and beachier, more aspirational ones (sweater tanks, shell-encrusted sandals). Really, it’s all about the idea of living in a small town by the sea—less Deadliest Catch, more Mystic Pizza.
The best part of the trend is that it’s easier than most to incorporate into your everyday wardrobe. While pieces like capri pants require real commitment, you can dip your toes into the fisherman aesthetic without really trying. Breton-stripe tees, for example, look great with board shorts and your favorite jeans alike. You can wear boat shoes to the beach or the office. Straw hats and seashell jewelry nod at the look without feeling too trendy to wear again. And when you’re ready to go all-in, just style them together.
As a shopping editor, I’m especially pleased with Free People’s take on the fisherman aesthetic. It was one of the first brands to really embrace the look, and the sheer number of coastal gems on the site means that there’s a little something for everyone. Why not a lobster-printed sweatshirt for a weekend on Cape Cod? What about some boho-nautical shorts for your off-duty wardrobe? And who can resist a beaded fish bag charm?
