Heading into the 2025 season, the quarterback position will be a primary point of focus for the New York Giants. As they navigate short and long-term options, one analyst thinks the team should make a drastic change before the year officially gets underway.

After cutting Daniel Jones midway through last year, the Giants are in a transitional phase under center. They rectified this issue in numerous ways with veterans in youth. Along with inking Russell Wilson to a one-year deal in free agency, they drafted Jaxson Dart 25th overall after trading into the back end of the first round.

For Wilson, this is his third team in as many years. Following an abysmal tenure with the Denver Broncos, he split time with Justin Fields as the starting QB for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Across 11 starts, Wilson posted a 6-5 record with 2,482 yards and 16 touchdowns.

While on the Breakfast Ball show earlier this week, NFL analyst Mark Schlereth gave his thoughts on the Giants’ QB personnel heading into this season. Before ever taking a snap for the team, he feels New York should cut Wilson and pave a path for Dart to be the starter in 2025.

“The Giants should cut Russell Wilson and start Jaxson Dart,” Schlereth said. “To me, if you drafted Jaxson Dart and you’re a roster right now offensively that has struggled and you’re in a division that has Philly, that has Washington, that has a Cowboy team that expects to bounce back, you start your rookie and you go with the growing pains.”

“The Giants should cut Russell Wilson and start Jaxson Dart.””You start your rookie and you go with the growing pains and you understand that you’re not going to the playoffs right now,” he said. “You do have a great defense, which is one of the best things you can give a young… pic.twitter.com/w5Uo7uPEJy

Schlereth makes a valid point when it comes to the Giants’ state within the NFC East. All the teams around them are eager to contend right now, and they are in the midst of a rebuild. Because of this, trying to be a middle-of-the-pack team with a veteran QB on a one-year deal makes little sense. Instead, they should focus on developing the talent they think will be their answer at the position for the foreseeable future.

One team in the NFC East is also a prime example of the benefits of throwing your young QB in the mix right away. Jayden Daniels put together an impressive rookie season last year that resulted in the Washington Commanders making the playoffs. Though Dart wasn’t a top-two pick like him, he was still one of the touted quarterbacks from his respective class.

While the Giants already appear to be high on Dart, it looks as though Wilson will be opening the 2025 season as New York’s starter.
