EXCLUSIVE: As Netflix gears up for the conclusion of its hit series Stranger Things later this year, Matt and Ross Duffer are eyeing their next project.

The Duffer Brothers are developing the Ron Currie novel The Savage, Noble Death of Babs Dionne at the streamer, with the author and his writing partner Joshua Mohr set to pen the series and executive produce. Hilary Leavitt will also EP with the Duffers through their Upside Down Pictures.

The crime-thriller centers on Babs Dionne, a proud Franco-American, doting grandmother, and vicious crime matriarch, who rules her small town of Waterville, Maine, with an iron fist. She controls the flow of drugs into Little Canada with the help of her loyal lieutenants, girlfriends since they were teenagers, and her eldest daughter, Lori, a Marine vet struggling with addiction. When a drug kingpin discovers that his numbers are down in the upper northeast, he sends a malevolent force, known only as The Man, to investigate. At the same time, Babs’s youngest daughter, Sis, has gone missing, which doesn’t seem at all like a coincidence. In twenty-four hours, Sis will be found dead, and the whole town will seek shelter from Babs’s wrath.

The Penguin Random House title was released in late March and has made multiple Best of 2025 lists, including NPR, Amazon, Apple Books, The Guardian, and Barnes & Noble.

Up next for the twins is the release of the fifth and final season of the smash genre-bending series Stranger Things, to drop in three parts on Nov. 26, Dec. 25 and Dec. 31. There is also the animated series Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 that exists within the “Stranger Things” Universe currently in development, and a live-action spinoff of the mothership series in the works.

Additionally, they produced the supernatural mystery series The Boroughs with Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews. It is slated to premiere in 2026 and stars Alfred Molina, Geena David, Alfre Woodard, and Denis O’Hare, to name a few. The Duffer Brothers also executive produced Haley Z. Boston’s new psychological horror Netflix series, Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen, starring Camila Morrone and Adam DiMarco, set to be released in 2026. They are repped by CAA.

Currie is the author of four novels and one collection of short stories. He has won the New York Public Library’s Young Lions Award, the Addison M. Metcalf Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the American Library Association’s Alex Award, and the Pushcart Prize. His books have been translated into 15 languages, and his short fiction and nonfiction have received recognition in Best American anthologies. As a screenwriter, he worked most recently on the Apple TV+ series Extrapolations. He is repped by Anonymous Content.

Mohr has authored several books, including Damascus and Some Things that Meant the World to Me, and he’s won the Northern California Book Award twice. Termite Parade was an editor’s choice on the New York Times Best Seller List. His latest project is the Viking Punk Saga trilogy, including Saint The Terrifying and the recently published The Wolf Wants Answers. Mohr is repped by Paradigm.

As a screenwriting team, Currie and Mohr have previously developed projects with AMC Studios, Amblin Television, and ITV America.
