EXCLUSIVE:  Amazon MGM Studios’ United Artists and Scott Stuber have taken rights to Freida McFadden‘s No. 1 New York Times bestselling psychological thriller, The Tenant.

The Tenant follows Blake Porter, a marketing executive whose life spirals after losing his job and struggling to make mortgage payments on his brownstone. When he takes in the seemingly perfect tenant Whitney, he discovers that danger lives closer to home than he ever imagined, as neighbors turn hostile, mysterious odors plague his house, and someone appears to know his darkest secrets. The novel, published by Sourcebooks’ Poisoned Pen Press, explores themes of revenge, privilege, and the deadly consequences when secrets turn sour.

The novel has held the spot on the NYT bestseller list for seven consecutive weeks.

UA’s Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt will produce the film adaptation along with Molly Sims of Something Happy Productions.

McFadden will executive produce.

SVP Olivia Heighten and Director of Development Annie McCreery, who brought the project in, will oversee for UA. Gaby McCormick will oversee the project on behalf of Something Happy Productions.

McFadden is a physician who has penned multiple bestselling psychological thrillers, including, The Housemaid series, the first novel adapted into a Lionsgate feature directed by Paul Feig and starring Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar. That pic hits theaters on Christmas Day.

Other upcoming projects from Stuber include Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein for Netflix, and Deliver Me from Nowhere, the Scott Cooper-directed drama that stars The Bear‘s Jeremy Allen White as Bruce Springsteen when the iconic singer hit an existential crossroads and turned it into the seminal album Nebraska, for 20th Century Studios and Disney. Both films are coming out this fall.

Recent credits from Something Happy Productions include Kinda Pregnant starring Amy Schumer and Will Forte (Netflix, co-produced with Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison), the upcoming The Last Mrs. Parrish, starring Jennifer Lopez and directed by Robert Zemeckis (Netflix), and the upcoming None of This is True (Netflix).

McFadden is represented by Angela Cheng Caplan of Cheng Caplan Company, Inc., Christina Hogrebe at Jane Rotrosen Agency, Allison Binder of GGSSC and Sims at Linden Entertainment, UTA and Schreck Rose Dapello Adams Berlin & Dunham.
