GUNTERSVILLE, Ala (WHNT) — The Fourth of July weekend is fast approaching, and we know many of you may be enjoying this holiday on the water.
Before the weekend gets here Alabama Law Enforcement agency is sharing tips to stay safe this holiday weekend.
Before you head out on the water, it’s a good idea to check on your navigation lights and to make sure you have a fire extinguisher aboard if your boat is over 16 feet.
With crowded holiday water, troopers want boat operators to enjoy their weekend, but understand they bear a serious responsibility.
“He’s responsible for everybody that’s on his vessel and his actions while he’s operating that vessel,” Colquitt said. “We’re looking for the use of the kill switch system, for the lifejackets, for everybody that’s on board to know where those lifejackets are.”
When it comes to drinking and boating, state troopers say it’s important for people to understand that drinking in the heat and sunshine affects you much differently than in your home.
“You’ve got the boater fatigue elements, the sun, the rocking of the boat out on the water, and everything… It’s going to make the consumption of alcohol actually a little bit more prevalent,” Colquitt said. “We recommend that you don’t operate a vessel while drinking.”
They encourage anyone planning to operate the boat to stay sober.
ALEA said there will be increased presence out on the water and the roadways next weekend to ensure safety.
