It’s officially summer, which means it’s time for a new under-eye patch to soothe and de-puff skin on a hot day. The Original Makeup Eraser Cooling Clouds Patches, a TikTok favorite, claims to do just that.

The premier feature of patches is it’s water-activation and reusability, making it easy on your wallet and the environment. Simply place the patches into cool water and let it fully saturate for about 10 to 20 minutes. Once the timer is up, you wring out any extra water, snap or wave the patches to activate the cooling technology, and prepare for the magic to start.

Another selling point: the reusability, as you simply place the pads in the accompanying mini wash bag and pop it into the machine. Once try, they’re ready to be used again.

Now that we’ve told you how to do it, let us show you. For the latest installment of 5 People Try, Glamour editors try The Original Makeup Eraser Cooling Cloud Patches to see if they do what they say. Let’s dive in.

Undereye patches aren’t a staple in my skincare routine, but I really enjoyed using these for the first time. During the summer months, my body temperature gets really hot so I love having a product to cool me down. It took me a second to get the hang of how to use this product, but once I understood, this product is super easy to get cold and use. I left it in water for a few minutes before applying it to my skin and receiving instant coolness. Plus, it’s reusable, which saves me time and money!

I love a good undereye patch, especially in the morning when I wake up, so I was pumped to try these cooling masks that promise to depuff tired eyes (sounds exactly like what the doctor ordered!). The methodology of these is a bit unique, though, as you have to soak them in water and twist to activate before application. My first impression of these was that they were definitely a bit thinner than other eye patches I’ve used in the past, but managed to soak up a good amount of water which instantly cooled them. After sliding them under my eyes (and on my forehead), my skin felt pretty immediately calmed and refreshed. After the fact, I have to say I did feel more awake than I had pre-eye mask, but my skin was a bit wet rather than dewy. The coolest thing about these is that they’re reusable too, so you can simply throw them in the wash (in the netted bag they come in) before your next eye mask sesh. While they were satisfying and did manage to wake me up a bit, I’d probably stick to my typical eye gels pre-makeup application, but these were definitely fun to try!

These eye patches mean well—they’re reusable and well-packaged—and as a person with bangs who often regrets that choice during the summer, I like that there’s a forehead patch. But to suggest that these are somehow cooler than just applying water to your face is, in my experience, disingenuous; they’re just wet patches with nothing really separating them from, like, damp paper towels other than looks. I wouldn’t stop you from buying these, especially if more intense products irritate your skin, but I don’t plan on adding them to my skin-care routine. (I’d recommend Dieux’s reusable eye masks if you’d like a sustainable option that helps your beauty products absorb better.)

I have two kids, I never sleep enough, and I also never remember to freeze my ice wands that help with my morning puffy eyes. So I was honestly intrigued by the Cooling Clouds face patches. I’ll be honest, when I first heard about them I thought they might be whizzier. As in, that by some magic system you’d be able to take the patches out and they’d be instantly cool. In fact they’re just pieces of washable fabric that you dip in water, squeeze out the excess, and apply to your face. Of course freezing an ice wand isn’t rocket science either, but I will say these patches were a little disappointing. Aside from looking cute, unless I managed to get my water ice ice cold, they didn’t do that much. You’re meant to keep the patches on for 20 minutes for the best results, but the under eye patches in particular didn’t stay on that well. I maybe got five minutes out of them before they would fall off. You also have to strike the right balance of not squeezing out so much water that they don’t stay on your face at all, and squeezing out enough so that water doesn’t drip down your face. I found the whole thing trickier than I was expecting, for a beauty product that’s so simple. The strongest vote in its favor was that it’s reusable, and not creating unnecessary trash. But my depuffing ice wands do the job I want faster and better. I just need to remember to freeze them!

I was really excited to try the Cooling Cloud Patches since I’m a big fan of brightening eye masks. I loved how sustainable they are, but I’m not sure I’d use them again. They didn’t get as cold as I expected, and they didn’t stay on my face very well. That said, I did look like a superhero while wearing them, so that was a fun bonus. Also, major points for the packaging—I’m a total sucker for great design.
