An American Airlines plane that had what appeared to be smoke and sparks coming from an engine returned to the airport in Las Vegas and landed shortly after takeoff on Wednesday, according to video of the plane and the Federal Aviation Administration.

A video of the plane, which was operating as American Airlines Flight 1665, showed it banking in the sky with smoke and bright flashes sputtering from an engine.

The F.A.A. said the crew had reported “an engine issue,” and the plane, which was headed to Charlotte, N.C., “returned safely” to Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas at about 8:20 a.m. local time, about 10 minutes after it took off.

FlightRadar24, a flight tracking service, showed the plane, an Airbus A321, flew in a small loop around the Las Vegas area before landing at the airport.

The plane was carrying 153 passengers and 6 crew members, according to American Airlines. No injuries were reported, according to the Las Vegas airport, which said the plane landed safely and taxied to the gate under its own power.

American Airlines said that after the plane returned to the airport because of “a mechanical issue,” it was inspected by maintenance workers, who found that “there was no evidence of fire in the engine.” The plane was taken out of service for further evaluation, the airline said.

“We appreciate the professionalism of our crew and thank our team who are working to get our customers to their destinations as quickly as possible,” American Airlines said in a statement.
