HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is asking utility customers to voluntarily conserve power due to temperatures heating up.
Temperatures will be in the 90’s this week across the Tennessee Valley. TVA says lowering your power demand will save you money on your power bill and make the power grid more reliable.
According to officials, TVA has been monitoring the extremely hot weather system settling across the Southeast United States.
For the Tennessee Valley, current forecasts indicate temperatures in the lower- to mid-90s through the end of next week. Hotter temperatures suggest that TVA will see loads above 31,000 megawatts.
All non-essential maintenance has been suspended to ensure the reliability and availability of generating assets.
This spring, TVA executed nearly 500 preventative maintenance activities at natural gas, hydro and coal sites.
You can save money and help save energy by following these energy saving tips:
- Close your curtains or blinds during the day.
- Set your thermostat to 78 degrees. Every degree can save 3% on your energy bill.
- Replace your HVAC system air filter every month.
If you don’t do anything else, TVA highly advises customers to get their HVAC systems serviced. TVA said that air conditioning makes up 50% of power bills. By getting your unit serviced, this could help save you money and lower your bill.
TVA also offers customers a $50 rebate to get their units serviced. You can learn more about the rebate by clicking here.
Customers served by the Load Curtailment Program are also asked to limit their electric use during peak hours by not running major electric appliances such as dishwashers, washer/dryers, ovens/stoves, and unnecessary lights.
