A man on probation was found with hundreds of pounds of illegal fireworks at a business complex in Upland earlier this week, according to local authorities.
The Upland Police Department posted on X that officers responded to a disturbance at a business in the 1600 block of West Arrow Route on Monday night; the exact time of the call was not disclosed.
One of the parties involved in the reported disturbance had brandished a weapon, police said.
“Officers contacted the suspect, who was on probation for assault out of L.A. County, and conducted a large probation search of his commercial unit,” UPD’s social media post said. “Officers uncovered a large stash of roughly 400 pounds of illegal fireworks that were being sold in the community and putting the business complex in immediate danger.”
The man, whose name was not released, was booked into jail for brandishing a weapon, possession of illegal fireworks for sale – a felony – and violating his probation.
“As a reminder, all fireworks are illegal in Upland,” police advised. “Violators, including property owners where the fireworks are discharged, can face a $1,000 fine.”
Individuals looking to report illegal fireworks within the Upland community should call UPD’s non-emergency line: 909-946-7624.
Incidents and legislation involving illegal fireworks have increased in the last few months; the city of Carson announced earlier this year that using, selling and discharging fireworks is not permitted, but illegal displays still occur regularly, negatively affecting residents.
Fullerton, meanwhile, recently adopted an urgency ordinance that significantly raises fines and enforces a zero-tolerance policy for the use and possession of illegal fireworks.
In May, officials with Cal Fire’s Office of the State Fire Marshal seized more than 100,000 pounds of illegal fireworks from a business in L.A. County.
