HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The heat wave is bringing more than high temperatures; it’s bringing scams.
The Better Business Bureau of North Alabama said it sees an uptick in scams during weather events, especially on social media.
While some local services companies advertise their business on websites like Facebook, the President and CEO of the North Alabama BBB, Karen Reeves, said people should proceed with extra caution if pursuing a service through a social media ad.
“We’ve seen situations where maybe a local, reputable company, their logo, their website, it’s been copied,” Reeves said. “And, so, it leads folks to think maybe they are doing business with a local company.”
Reeves said there are key components to look out for when confirming a service company’s legitimacy: a local, physical address, readily available contact information and detailed descriptions of services they offer. She said the real legitimacy test for the company is when a customer speaks to them.
“Always ask lots of questions upfront when you have contacted the company,” Reeves said. “Is there a service charge? How long is the wait? Is there a guarantee or a warranty for the work?”
Reeves added that it is critical to verify that a service company’s licenses are all up to date.
The BBB’s website provides a directory of service contractors in the area and includes a certification for companies it has verified.
The Service Legend released a guide specifically catered to avoiding scams in repairing an HVAC system.
