Francestown, N.H. | $689,000

A Federal-style house built in 1830, on 0.4 acres

This four-bedroom, three-and-a-half bathroom house is known as the Betsy Searle Place, after its original occupant. The house is on Francestown’s Main Street, within a five-minute walk of the town’s Old Meeting House, a building holding the town’s offices and fire department, and a coffee shop that also serves handmade chocolates. Brennan Falls, a popular destination for day hikers, is five minutes away, and the ski slopes of Crotched Mountain are 10 minutes away.

Concord, N.H., the state capital, is 45 minutes away, while Portsmouth, N.H., and Boston are both 90 minutes away, and Hartford, Conn. is a two-and-a-half hour drive.

Size: 2,724 square feet

Price per square foot: $253

Indoors: From the street, a red brick path leads to a covered entryway flanked by a pair of columns.

In the foyer, stairs rise to the second level and Tamarack pine floors continue into a formal living room that has deep-set windows with wood shutters. On the other side of the staircase is a formal dining room, where a fireplace is finished with a white mantelpiece.

Behind the dining room is an updated kitchen with stainless steel appliances and a garden window above the sink that looks out at the red barn behind the house. Off the kitchen is a sunny family room with white paneling. A powder room is off this space, and a mudroom with Moroccan-inspired tile floors is off the kitchen.

All four bedrooms are on the second floor. The primary suite has a bedroom with its own fireplace and space for a king-size bed, plus a full bathroom. Another bedroom next door also has its own en suite bathroom. Two other bedrooms, both big enough for queen-size beds, share a bathroom with white wainscoting and green walls.

Outdoor space: From the small patio behind the house, stone steps lead down to a second, larger patio adjacent to the property’s classic red barn. A yard on the other side of the barn is landscaped with grass and framed by mature trees. A driveway alongside the house holds two cars.

Taxes: $9,660 (estimated)

Los Angeles | $695,000

A 1914 Craftsman bungalow, on 0.2 acres that also holds three other homes

This two-bedroom, one-bathroom house, within the boundaries of Los Angeles’s Angeleno Heights Historic Protection Overlay Zone, is one of four on its lot, and is part of a Tenancy in Common ownership model. The neighborhood is bustling: Dodger Stadium is 10 minutes away on foot, and nearby dining and drinking options include El Compadre, a Mexican restaurant that opened in 1975, the Detroit-style pizza spot Quarter Sheets, and a handful of cocktail bars.

Most of downtown is 15 minutes away by bus, and by car, Silver Lake takes five minutes and Hollywood takes 10 minutes.

Size: 715 square feet

Price per square foot: $972

Indoors: A white picket fence has a gate opening to the front yard, and paved steps continue up to a covered porch big enough for a set of chairs.

The door opens directly to a living room with new hardwood floors and original front-facing windows. The ceilings are coffered, and behind the living room is a combined dining room and kitchen with walls finished with white board-and-batten trim.

A pendant light hangs in the dining area, and in the kitchen the countertops are butcher block. A mix of cabinets and open shelves line the walls and the backsplash is made of plaster.

A hallway between the living room and kitchen leads to the bedrooms and the bathroom. The primary bedroom, which fits a queen-size bed, has a door that opens to a small patio. The second bedroom, across the hall, currently holds a daybed and a desk. The bathroom was recently updated, getting a combined tub and shower, a vanity with goldtone hardware and new tile floors. A laundry closet is also off the hall, and the home has a new mini-split heating and cooling, and a tankless water heater.

Outdoor space: Each of the four homes on the lot has its own front yard, and the one attached to this house is big enough to hold an outdoor dining table. Citrus trees are planted along the fence, and street parking is available throughout the neighborhood.

Taxes: $8,688 (estimated), plus a $199 monthly homeowner’s association fee

Columbus, Ohio | $699,900

A Colonial Revival house built in 1929, on 0.1 acres

This four-bedroom, three-bathroom house is in Bexley Park, 15 minutes by car from the Ohio Statehouse in downtown Columbus. An ice cream shop and a wine store are each five minutes away on foot, and a steakhouse, an Indian restaurant and a pizza parlor are also nearby. The Drexel Theatre, an Art Deco movie house that shows independent films, is within walking distance, as is the campus of Capital University, which has around 1,700 undergraduate students.

The nearly 90-acre Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens complex is 10 minutes away by car, as is John Glenn Columbus International Airport.

Size: 2,638 square feet

Price per square foot: $265

Indoors: This house is behind a lawn, with a red brick planter and an elevated front porch.

The door opens to a living room with a fireplace that has an original clay tile surround. Off one side of the living room is the home’s original formal dining room, used now as a home office. Off another is the combined family room and dining area, where a second fireplace has a floor-to-ceiling brick surround and sliding-glass doors face the deck outside.

Off the family room is the kitchen, which was recently updated. The countertops are quartz, the backsplash is white tile and appliances include a dishwasher and a gas range. A laundry room with backyard access is off this part of the house, as is a full bathroom.

A staircase beginning in the original formal dining room leads to the second floor, where the primary bedroom has an accent wall painted black. A walk-in closet is attached, as is a bathroom with new hexagonal-tile floors and a glass-walled walk-in shower.

There are three other bedrooms on this level, all with closets and ceiling fans and all big enough for queen-size beds. The guest bathroom was also recently updated with glossy navy blue paint and a new double vanity.

Outdoor space: The rear deck is wide, with plenty of space for outdoor dining. A paved patio sits on one side of the deck, and a yard with space for a garden on the other. The wood fence surrounding the yard is new and a detached garage holds two cars.

Taxes: $8,112 (estimated)
