SHEFFIELD, Ala. (WHNT) — Sheffield City Schools has announced it has named a new assistant superintendent and interim head football coach.
On Tuesday, the Sheffield Board of Education hired Jill Edwards as assistant superintendent and Michael Parker as interim head football coach for Sheffield High School.
The school system said Edwards most recently served as the curriculum director at Florence City schools and previously worked as both an elementary school and high school administrator. She succeeds Darryl Washington in the job.
“Her blend of vision, instructional expertise and practical leadership makes her exceptionally qualified to help us move Sheffield forward,” SCS Superintendent Carlos Nelson said.
SCS said Parker began working last year at SHS as the offensive coordinator and assistant coach. Before that, the system said he spent five years as head coach at Clements High School. He is taking over the program from Johnny Wright, who stepped down for health reasons.
The system said that Wright recommended Parker, saying he felt the coach could move the program forward.
Nelson said that Parker’s rapport and experience with the players will give him a leg up in his new role, as the interim appointment gives stability to the program.
“At the end of the season, we can evaluate whether this direction best serves our athletic program long term,” The superintendent said.
