Seeing Sherry Huang’s airy white layers catch the breeze on a Friday evening in May recalled the sight of a soft white cloud drifting through the sky. Her ensemble of billowy shirt, ruffly dress and matching purse had an ethereal quality that helped Ms. Huang stand out among the many tourists and would-be influencers taking photos outside an old police building that has become a local landmark in Singapore.
Ms. Huang, 25, who grew up in Taiwan, is a dental student in Japan. She was in Singapore for a Lady Gaga concert, for which she had planned a look edgier than the one she was wearing when we met: She described it as red and black.
While Japanese culture has influenced her clothing choices, Ms. Huang explained that she follows a simple rule when it comes to style. “I just dress what I like,” she said.
