At long last, The Gilded Age season 3 is upon us, and we are all seated and ready for more social climbing, scheming, thwarted romance, and occasionally a major historical event.
In the second season finale, which aired in December of 2023, all of New York City society was upended when Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) won the Opera Wars against Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy) by offering the Duke (Ben Lamb) her daughter Gladys’s (Taissa Farmiga) hand in marriage. Meanwhile, Larry (Harry Richardson) and Marian (Louisa Jacobson) finally got together and Ada (Cynthia Nixon) discovered that her late husband left her a fortune, thus saving the Van Rhijns from financial ruin.
What could possibly follow such a dramatic turn of events? Well, according to Jacobson in an interview with Elle, at least, “There are a lot of twists and turns that no one’s going to be ready for.”
So, without further ado, here is everything we know about The Gilded Age season 3.
How do I watch The Gilded Age season 3?
First things first, you’re going to need to know how to watch The Gilded Age season 3. The season premieres on HBO Max at 9 pm ET on Sunday, June 22. All eight episodes will be available for streaming on Sundays at the same time.
Who’s in The Gilded Age season 3 cast?
No need to fret. The stars of the first two seasons all appear to be returning for the third installment, including Coon, fresh from The White Lotus, Farmiga, Richardson, Nixon, and Meryl Streep daughter Jacobson. Also set to return are Christine Baranski as Agnes Van Rhijn, Morgan Spector as George Russell, Denée Benton as Peggy Scott, and Audra McDonald as her mother.
But we’re also excited to report that there will be some new characters as well. Phylicia Rashad (!) will play Mrs. Elizabeth Kirkland, per Variety, a woman from a prominent Newport family. Brian Stokes Mitchell will play Mrs. Kirkland’s husband, Frederick, the pastor of a prominent Black church. Additionally, per The Hollywood Reporter, we’ll get appearances from big names like Merritt Weaver and Bill Camp, among several others.
What will it be about?
According to the official logline, season 3 of The Gilded Age promises no shortage of drama, both of the personal and historical varieties.
“Following the Opera War, the old guard is weakened and the Russells stand poised to take their place at the head of society. Bertha sets her sights on a prize that would elevate the family to unimaginable heights while George risks everything on a gambit that could revolutionize the railroad industry—if it doesn’t ruin him first,” the description reads. “Across the street, the Brook household is thrown into chaos as Agnes refuses to accept Ada’s new position as lady of the house. Peggy meets a handsome doctor from Newport whose family is less than enthusiastic about her career.”
But some of the actors have also hinted at what’s to come for their characters. In an interview with Deadline, Baranski hinted that her character, Agnes, is not adjusting well to being second-in-command to her sister. “Well, she has to cope, doesn’t she? She’s suddenly not the head of the household,” she said. “So that fall from grace and that fall from power, that’s always such a delicious thing to play.” And Jacobson told Elle, “What’s exciting about season 3 is that…you hear from her more about [Marian’s] motivations, her fears, and why they exist. That’s definitely something I advocated for….You’re going to see, oh right, she’s traumatized, and…the effects of that.”
Is there a The Gilded Age season 3 trailer?
There is indeed. Which is how we know one of the major plot points this season will involve Gladys Russell’s less-than-smooth entrance into society. The full trailer, featuring narration from rivals Bertha and Agnes in turns, promises plenty of the high-low stakes drama The Gilded Age is famous for.
We see glimpses of Marian and Larry becoming closer at the same time Bertha and George Russell begin to grow apart. There is even talk of—gasp!—divorce in their future. We also see Agnes and Ada bickering, as per usual, while Peggy appears to be getting involved in politics. “Oh, I want to be a good wife and mother…who has the vote,” she tells her shocked mother.
We can’t wait.
