Huntington Beach hosted one of the most adorable and action-packed competitions of the year on Friday and Saturday: the 28th annual Purina Pro Plan Incredible Dog Challenge. This lively event brings together some of the most talented dogs in the country to compete in surfing, diving, catching and jumping through hoops, all in pursuit of a spot on the winner’s stage.
The event serves as the western regional qualifier, where the top-performing dogs advance to the national championships. For many participants and their owners, it is not just a contest; it is a lifestyle.
“They are treated like pro athletes,” said Amanda Fleck, whose dog competed over the weekend. “I mean, we have kind of like a workout schedule to prepare them for this, because if they’re fit, then they’re less likely to have any injuries. And then, he’ll wear a Back on Track coat, which kind of helps with his muscles and gets him ready for tomorrow.”
Much like in human sports, tensions can run high on the sidelines. Judges occasionally find themselves fielding heated comments from enthusiastic dog owners.
Kama Rueschenberg, one of the competition judges, told KTLA that while most of the crowd is supportive and understanding, she does sometimes encounter combative pet parents, although it is not the norm.
Still, for most attendees, the weekend is all about camaraderie and fun. “It’s just fun. She loves the water. She’s a retriever. It’s great to be outdoors and seeing the same people at some of the events over and over. Everybody’s so friendly,” said Lori Andersen, a dog parent enjoying the festivities.
As the waves settled and the final scores were tallied, the event once again proved why it has become a beloved tradition. It is not just a competition. It is a celebration of the incredible bond between dogs and their humans, built on athleticism, training and joy.
