CALERA, Ala. (WIAT) — One person was arrested in connection to a shooting that occurred in the Walmart parking lot in Calera Thursday morning, according to the Calera Police Department.
Police say they received a call reporting the shooting at around 11:10 a.m. According to the victim and witnesses, the suspect exited her vehicle with a firearm and fired into the victim’s car.
According to the Calera Police Department, the bullet traveled close to a car seat that was unoccupied. The vehicle had a bullet hole in the back driver side door that exited the rear window on the passenger side.
The suspect was located within 20 minutes and placed under arrest.
Police say the suspect, who is from Bessemer, switched tags after leaving the scene. However, a detailed description provided by the victim and witnesses and video provided by Walmart security assisted police in locating the suspect. An on-call detective was called to continue the investigation.
“Our country has serious problems when people get so angry over a parking spot that they pull out a gun and fire into an occupied vehicle,” Calera Police Chief David Hyche said in a statement. “If a child had been in that car seat this could have been a far more tragic event. I want to commend the witness for stepping forward and providing information. I also want to personally thank our dispatchers and officers who were short staffed and slammed with calls today. They immediately responded, passed on vital information and made the arrest. That’s how it’s done! I’m also grateful that we have the extra bodies from our SRO crew in the summer to help out when we are overwhelmed. We will be working with the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office now to charge the suspect appropriately.”
