“Each time I’ve made a film it’s become more and more personal,” said Coogler . With this one I was digging into two relationships, one with my maternal grandfather who I never met. He died about a year before I was born,” said Coogler shortly ahead of the film’s April release. “He was from Merrill, Mississippi and eventually moved to Oakland, married my grandmother and actually built a house that our whole family was based out of in Oakland.”
Considered one of the biggest horror hits in global box office history, Sinners grossed over $361 million worldwide, with $276 million domestically. This makes it one of the biggest original movies since 2010, and the third 2025 movie to pass the $275 million domestic milestone.
The film is written and directed by Coogler, and produced by Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian, and Ryan Coogler. The executive producers are Ludwig Göransson, Will Greenfield, and Rebecca Cho.
