Following an impressive sophomore run in 2023, Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson struggled to live up to the team’s expectations.
The former fourth-round pick out of Wisconsin seemed to be on his way to stardom after a strong second season in the NFL. Instead, the Cowboys watched him catch 59 passes for 494 yards. Ferguson couldn’t find the end zone once, and even fumbled the ball four times, after preventing fumbles entirely during his first two seasons in the league.
It was a down season, for sure, and Ferguson wasn’t dodging the narrative. According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Ferguson made it clear that there is zero satisfaction with last year’s campaign. The young veteran noted that a setback certainly set him back.

“My knee hurt, for sure,” the Cowboys tight end admitted.
And while a concussion contributed to missed time for Ferguson, he doesn’t want to use the setbacks as an excuse for his unsatisfying performances.
“I’ve said this before, if I’m on the field, I should be able to give it my all,” the tight end added. “I don’t think I’ve ever played a full season and not scored a touchdown. That was something that I came into this offseason really working on. Just trying to really dial in on those things.”
The Cowboys are confident that Ferguson’s run was a fluke. As he battled setbacks, playing in just 14 games after making 17 appearances one season prior, Dallas sees several reasons why the tight end didn’t play as well as he did in 2023. The injury to Dak Prescott clearly had an effect on the offense.

When Ferguson first entered the NFL, he appeared in 16 games during his rookie year. The young tight end caught just 19 passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns. As he became a full-time starter in year two, Ferguson came down with 71 catches. He produced 761 yards and scored five times.
With Prescott healthy again, the Cowboys expect their passing game to see a major update. The team added a standout pass-catcher in George Pickens via trade. Another high-end target for Prescott could lead to more opportunities for Ferguson to get looks as the secondary has its hands tied with the dangerous duo of CeeDee Lamb and Pickens.
